Share Ed Mazza May 17th 2019 6:04AM Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is calling on the Christian right to uphold their principles on one key issue: interest rates.
The freshman lawmaker and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have introduced a bill to cap interest rates at 15 percent.
It would cut rates ― often dramatically ― on credit cards, and hit the payday loan industry and other predatory lenders.
AOC: GOP doesnt care about babies because they wont support the Green New Deal
On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez challenged the religious right to support the bill, pointing out that usury is explicitly denounced in the Bible.
Then, she knocked them for using religion to take rights away from people… but not when it helps them:
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York on Thursday suggested that the Bible backs up her proposal to impose a 15% federal cap on credit-card interest rates.
What angers me about the GOPs attempts to turn the United States into a far-right Christian theocracy is how dishonest they are about it.At least be forthright about your desire to subvert and dismantle our democracy into a creepy theological order led by a mad king.
“Usury — aka high interest — happens to be explicitly denounced in the Bible (& in many other religions),” the freshman Democrat said in a tweet. “Looking forward to having the religious right uphold their principles + sign onto my bill. Unless of course theyre only invoking religion to punish women + queer people.”
Ohio banned abortions once a heartbeat is detected, and George passed a similar measure in May. Alabamas law is the strictest, banning abortion in all three trimesters with an exception for the life of the mother.
Ocasio-Cortez is correct that the Bible contains multiple verses condemning usury and charging interest on loans. Deuteronomy 23:19, for example, says, “You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest.”
Ocasio-Cortezs criticism of Republicans comes two days after Alabama passed the strictest abortion law in the nation. She ended her thread by saying Republicans were turning into a creepy theological order.
“Usury humiliates and kills,” the Pope said at the time. “Usury is a grave sin. It kills life, stomps on human dignity, promotes corruption, and sets up obstacles to the common good.”
Ocasio-Cortez rolled out the text of the nonbinding resolution of the Green New Deal in February. The measure included proposals meant to combat climate change.

The freshman congresswoman has been vocal in her opposition against newly passed abortion restrictions in Ohio and Georgia.
Ocasio-Cortez introduced the plan to cap credit-card interest rates alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont last week, and a recent INSIDER poll found that an overwhelming number of Republicans (nearly 70%) and Democrats (73%) are in favor of the proposal.
The Democratic lawmakers tweet on usury also came amid a national debate over womens health and reproductive rights as a number of states have recently passed extreme abortion laws.
As Ocasio-Cortez alluded, the ongoing and divisive discussion on abortion in the US has long been tied to religion.
On Wednesday, for example, Alabamas governor invoked the states large Christian population as she signed the strictest abortion ban the country has seen since Roe v. Wade — the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.

In signing the bill, Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said it “stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God.”
The state of Alabama has a population thats 86% Christian, and 58% of Alabamians say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, according to Pew Research Center.
Ocasio-Cortez touched on the religious motivations behind antiabortion legislation in a separate tweet on Thursday.
“Abortion bans arent just about controlling womens bodies. Theyre about controlling womens sexuality. Owning women,” she said. “From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.”
Nationally, only about 14% of Americans would support an abortion ban as extreme as the one Alabamas new law calls for.
