The U.S. Geological Survey reported the first, a magnitude 2.9 quake centered about two miles east of Berkeley, happened at 8:44 a.m.
The second quake struck a few miles away in Oakland several hours later. That 2.7 magnitude tremor was felt at 12:35 p.m., the USGS reported.
