2 Transients Arrested in Deadly Carlsbad Stabbing Case

CARLSBAD (KUSI) – Police said the man and woman suspected of murdering a woman in her home in Carlsbad are transients with a record of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and electronics. After abandoning the one item they stole, this latest attack and murder seems all the more sinister.

A quiet Carlsbad neighborhood with lush green lawns, blooming flowers, and friendly neighbors are shaken Monday morning by the sounds of police choppers, sirens, and reports of a sinister burglary that resulted in bloodshed.

Investigators believe a man and a woman broke into the woman’s home then fled in the victim’s vehicle, the lieutenant said. A K9 unit from the Oceanside Police Department and a San Diego County Sheriff’s helicopter were called in to search for the suspects.

Police say in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane around 12:30 a.m. a man and woman broke into a home, stabbing the unsuspecting 64-year-old woman inside multiple times. They then took off in her car. By the time paramedics could get to her, she was succumbing to her wounds, dying at the hospital an hour later.

Officers responded to the home and found the 64-year-old woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. Paramedics took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:32 a.m., Jackowski said, adding that her name was withheld pending family notification.

By 7:30 p.m. authorities confirmed that 37-year-old Ian Bushee and 26-year-old Malissa James, both transients and both on probation in San Bernardin, are the two suspects in this murder.

Dispatchers received a call from a woman around 12:30 a.m. reporting that she had been stabbed in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane, just north of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, Carlsbad Police Lt. Jason Jackowski said.

What’s not clear, is why the suspects stabbed the homeowner to death only to abandon the stolen car and return to the lagoon just blocks from the scene of the crime.

In the late morning, officers took a man and woman into custody at gunpoint in an open area near the site of the home-invasion slaying, but police had no other immediate information about the arrests.

Carlsbad Police Chief Neil Gallucci says after this tragedy his prayers are with the family and while the accused homeless couple remains in custody, police will continue collecting evidence and building their case.

Deputies found the victim’s vehicle abandoned in the 800 block of Grand Avenue in San Marcos shortly after 5:30 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. David Buether said.

Bushee and James are both being held without bail pending arraignment scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
