Texas infants body found in flower pot at cemetery, police say

CARROLLTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – The body of an infant was found inside a flower pot at a cemetery in Carrollton by a caretaker on March 11.

According to police, a caretaker at Perry Cemetery emptied a flower pot that was “out of place” and found the body under soil inside the pot.

The medical examiner determined that the infant was a girl and was 34 weeks to full term. She weighed six pounds and still had the umbilical cord attached to her.

Police said a caretaker at the Perry Cemetery on Perry Road found the baby girl after he spotted an out of place flowerpot and found the body of the baby beneath the soil in the pot.

“We are awaiting further test results to determine whether she was born alive,” Carrollton police spokeswoman Jolene DeVito said in a news release Wednesday.

Investigators say the flower pot may have been placed inside the cemetery between Wednesday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, March 2.

The cemetery believes the flowerpot was placed on the grounds sometime between Feb. 27 and March 2. The body was discovered on March 11.

Police say it appears someone was trying to craft a burial spot by putting the body in the pot and placing flowers inside.

A caretaker at a Texas cemetery made a grim discovery earlier this month, finding the body of a baby buried in a flowerpot, police said Wednesday.

The deceased girl was found at the Perry Cemetery on March 11 when the caretaker “emptied what he knew to be an out of place flowerpot,” according to a news release from the Carrollton Police Department.

The medical examiner found that the child weighed less than six pounds and was 34 weeks to full term, according to authorities. Her umbilical cord was “still attached,” police said.

The flowerpot is believed to have arrived on the cemetery grounds between Feb. 27 and March 2, based on details from the caretaker, police said.

The police department has taken its case to the public, asking for any information tied to their investigation.

“Among our immediate priorities is identifying the baby to ensure a proper burial,” police said.
