COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Richland Northeast Football team announced that one of their players who suffered a heart attack Wednesday is receiving treatment in Charleston.
Quarterback Josh Boyd spent Wednesday night in Palmetto Richland and was transported to MUSC in Charleston on Thursday. He is scheduled to have surgery on Friday.
As you may know, our QB Josh Boyd had a heart attack yesterday morning and spent last night at Palmetto Richland. Happy to report that he has made it to MUSC in Charleston and will have surgery tomorrow. He has been awake and talking. Please continue to keep him in your prayers.
Richland Northeast High School quarterback Josh Boyd suffered a heart attack Wednesday during an off-campus pickup basketball game, according to RNE coach Bennett Weigle.
A group of firemen were playing in the gym and one of them immediately performed CPR on Boyd, a junior at RNE. Boyd was taken to the hospital.
Boyd is now at MUSC in Charleston and will have open-heart surgery Friday afternoon. A GoFundme page has been established to help with the Boyds medical bills.
Weigle said the team will bring Boyds jersey to Fridays game against defending state champion South Pointe and have the players walk out with it. Boyd is one of the teams captains. This season, Boyd has thrown for 437 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for 158 yards.
Boyd also is a member of RNEs basketball team. Weigle said he will use a quarterback committee against the Stallions.
