Woman in critical condition after driving car into Merrimack River in Concord, NH

Rescuers pulled a woman in critical condition from a submerged SUV in the Merrimack River that veered off the highway Monday night in Concord, police said. 

Around 5:30 p.m., New Hampshire State Police responded to a report of a vehicle that left the northbound lanes of Interstate 93 and into the Merrimack River. The vehicle traveled into a field along the highway, then became airborne and crashed into the river.

When rescuers first arrived, the SUV was upside down and completely submerged with the female driver still inside, police said.

Woman critically injured after crashing into NH river

Concord Fire and Rescue was able to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the female driver, who was in critical condition at Concord Hospital, police said.

Southbound traffic was already heavy at the time, due to Columbus Day traffic. Police did not identify the driver.

Troopers said her SUV veered off the road and into a field, went airborne, and landed upside down in the Merrimack River.
