FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KTVU) – Fairfield police on Tuesday said their officers shot and wounded a suspect who had allegedly broken into a convenience store and was seen walking away from the business with what appeared to be a handgun.

Sgt. Matt Bloesch the man refused to comply with officers' demands to drop what was in his hands, and then he ran away through the commericial area. After several minutes of chasing him, officers shot the man about 2:10 a.m. in the area of Clay Bank Road and Horizon Drive. Officers then gave him medical aid and he was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police say what was in the man's hands is under investigation. 

Police were first alerted to the break-in when an alarm company noticed a glass break at Convenience Mart on Horizon Drive.
