The Air Force reported that Staff Sgt. Anthony James Dean was killed in a crash involving the SUV. Also killed were Dean’s 25-year-old wife Chelsi Kay Dean and their two daughters, Kaytlin Merie Dean, 5, and Avri James Dean, 1.

The Grand Forks Air Force Base says the North Dakota family killed in a crash in Montana was a U.S. Air Force family.

Sgt. Dean, 25, was assigned to the 69th Maintenance Squadron at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota.

The remains of Staff Sgt. Anthony James Dean and Chelsi Kay Dean, both 25, were discovered, as were those of their two daughters, 5-year-old Kaytlin Merie Dean and 1-year-old Avri James Dean.

“Words are not enough during a time like this,” said Maj. Eric Inkenbrandt, 69th Maintenance Squadron commander. “AJ’s family brought a light to our maintenance community, and this loss strikes each of us deeply. May their friends and family be granted the strength and serenity to get through this sorrowful time.”

Montana Highway Patrol discovered the accident scene Saturday morning in Huntley — 13 miles east of Billings — while searching for the missing family, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

They were traveling on Interstate 94 when their Toyota 4Runner went off the road and came to rest in a creek.

The patrol says their Toyota 4Runner went off the interstate near Huntley at about 7 a.m. Thursday and traveled through the median before going airborne off an embankment. The SUV struck a concrete bridge support pillar and came to rest in Pryor Creek.

They were planning to drive from Caldwell, Idaho, to Ekalaka, Mont., for Thanksgiving, according to the paper

Carter County Sheriff Neil Kittelmann told The Billings Gazette Saturday the victims were Anthony and Chelsi Dean, both 25, from the Grand Forks area of North Dakota, and their daughters, 5-year-old Kaytlin and 20-month-old Avri.

A North Dakota family of four who disappeared on a Thanksgiving road trip have been confirmed dead, after their wrecked car was discovered in Montana over the holiday weekend.

Sgt. Dean was assigned to the 69th Maintenance Squadron at Grand Forks Air Force Base and was a member of the Manvel North Dakota Volunteer Fire Department.

The Dean family had visited relatives in Caldwell, Idaho, and were on their way to Ekalaka, Montana, the Seattle Times notes.

According to the Highway Patrol, the family was driving a blue Toyota Forerunner east on Interstate 94 around 7 a.m. when the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a median. The vehicle traveled down the median for a distance before going airborne off an embankment between the eastbound and westbound bridge deck, the Montana patrol said.
