HRBT back open after eight-vehicle crash; driver charged

HAMPTON ROADS, VA (WWBT) – One person faces charges in an eight-vehicle crash that shut down all travel lanes of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Wednesday morning.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, according to Virginia State Police, which occurred at 8:22 a.m.

The (bucket) truck swerved into the path of a tanker-truck, which caused the tanker-truck to strike the tunnel wall, Virginia State Police said. The (bucket) truck jack-knifed into the tractor trailer, which sparked a chain reaction of vehicles crashing in the eastbound lanes inside the HRBT.

William Lewis Alexander Marakos, the driver of the bucket truck, was charged with following too close, according to WAVY.
