Share Share RJ Hampton cuts Kentucky tweet share Reddit Pocket Flipboard Email Since reclassifying into the Class of 2019, five-star guard and fourth-overall recruit RJ Hampton has been trying to make a college decision sooner rather than later.
On Monday, Hampton took another step toward doing so, as he cut the Kentucky Wildcats from consideration and trimmed his list to three schools: The Kansas Jayhawks, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Memphis Tigers.
RJ Hampton is down to Memphis, Kansas, and Texas Tech, per his father on our show. Says Kentuckys backcourt is set.

Hampton recently released his final four of schools hes interested in, listing Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis and Texas Tech.
But with Kentucky returning Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley to join 2019 additions Tyrese Maxey and Johnny Juzang, Hampton wants to go elsewhere and have more command of a backcourt.
The Hamptons must have been impressed with the coaching of Chris Beard over recent years to include Texas Tech over Kentucky, who was once viewed as the favorite in this recruitment. While Beards program could certainly pull off a shocker and land Hampton, its most likely that the star recruit winds up with either Memphis or Kansas.
Kansas is absolutely a spectacular program, however they havent quite matched up to the success of Kentucky as far as preparing college athletes for the NBA and also dont have the swagger Memphis has to offer.
Former NBA All-Star and Orlando Magic great Penny Hardaway is now coaching the Tigers and has made significant noise in regards to recruits of the 2019 class.
Starting with top-overall recruit James Wiseman and following that up with DJ Jeffries, Lester Quinones, Boogie Ellis and Precious Achiuwa, ending with Hampton would be a home run for Hardaway.
While it stings to miss on a recruit as good as Hampton, Kentucky has the comfort of knowing theyll have a great backcourt next season with Hagans, Maxey, Juzang and Quickley leading the way.

Hampton, who recently opted to reclassify from 2020 to 2019, is considering Kansas, Memphis and Texas Tech, according to his father Rod Hampton.
Hampton has previously taken official visits to Kansas (Dec. 14) and Memphis (Sept. 13), and he may be going back to Kansas next week.
“I’m thinking that he may visit Kansas with Jalen [Wilson],” the elder Hampton told 247Sports.
Wilson is scheduled to go to Kansas from May 30 to June 1st. Hampton added that it wasn’t definitive, and that Wilson and his son are best friends, but they both ended to make their college choices separately.
The next question is if he’ll take an official to Texas Tech, who jumped in his recruitment recently.
“We don’t need to visit to Kansas or Memphis, but the next couple of days he’s going to decide where Texas Tech stands,” he said. “If he’s serious about that then we’ll go visit.”
In terms of making his college choice, Hampton, a standout at Little Elm (Tex.) High, has targeted early June to knock out a decision.
Hampton currently ranks No. 5 overall and a the No. 2 combination guard in the 247Sports Composite and Top247 Rankings.
