Amazon Studios has set an all-star cast for Modern Love, its highly-anticipated straight-to-series half-hour romantic comedy anthology based on the popular New York Times column about love and human connection. "It's like I woke up in the actor candy store. We've managed to assemble a dream cast of my favorite actors," said showunner John Carney (Once, Sing Street). "It's a testament to the reach of the original column and of how, now more than ever, love is the only certainty."

The cast for Modern Love also includes Andy Garcia, Cristin Milioti, Olivia Cooke, Andrew Scott, Shea Whigham, Gary Carr, Sofia Boutella and John Gallagher Jr.

Modern Love hails from filmmaker John Carney (Once, Begin Again, Sing Street), who will write, direct, and produce, Storied Media Group, and The New York Times. Over eight standalone episodes, the series will explore love in its multitude of forms – including sexual, romantic, familial, platonic, and self love.

Modern Love was one of the early pickups for Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke after she moved from NBC in February 2018. She told The Hollywood Reporter in June that she was looking for "our next big show that women also can't stop talking about," with Modern Love representing a step in that direction.

Todd Hoffman will executive produce alongside Carney and Trish Hofmann serves as producer. Sam Dolnick and Choire Sicha of The New York Times will also serve as executive producers on the series; Modern Love column editor Daniel Jones serves as consulting producer. Modern Love is currently in production in New York.

Horgan wrote the episode she's directing, which will feature Fey and Slattery (who guested on Fey's 30 Rock back in 2010). Hall also wrote the episode he's directing, while Rossum's episode was written by the late Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give, Under the Tuscan Sun).

“It’s like I woke up in the actor candy store. We’ve managed to assemble a dream cast of my favorite actors. It’s a testament to the reach of the original column and of how, now more than ever, love is the only certainty,” said Carney.

Modern Love, from Storied Media Group and The New York Times, is currently in production in New York. Carney executive produces along with Todd Hoffman and Sam Dolnick and Choire Sicha of the Times. Trish Hoffman is producer; "Modern Love" editor Daniel Jones is a consulting producer.

Based on the New York Times column and podcast of the same name, Modern Love will span eight half-hour episodes, with each one exploring “love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms,” per the official description.

Also cast in the project (deep breath!): John Slattery (Mad Men), Dev Patel (The Newsroom), Catherine Keener (Kidding), Andy Garcia (Ballers), Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror), Brandon Victor Dixon (Power), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), Andrew Scott (Sherlock), Julia Garner (Ozark), Shea Whigham (Homecoming), Gary Carr (The Deuce), John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom) and Sofia Boutella (Fahrenheit 451).

“It’s like I woke up in the actor candy store. We’ve managed to assemble a dream cast of my favorite actors,” said showrunner John Carney. “It’s a testament to the reach of the original column and of how, now more than ever, love is the only certainty.”

This is not the first time a Modern Love project has enlisted big names: The podcast frequently features celebrities (including TV stars like Sandra Oh, Ellie Kemper and Giancarlo Esposito) who read real-life love stories that have appeared in the Times column.

Additionally, Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) and Emmy Rossum (Shameless) have been tapped to direct episodes in Modern Love‘s first season. The show is currently in production in New York.
