A Mesquite police officer will be subject to internal discipline for accidentally firing his handgun at Horn High School on Thursday morning, according to the Mesquite Police Department.
The officer, whose name was not released, was trying to inspect his handgun in an office around 11:45 a.m., police said. He removed the magazine but neglected to empty the chamber and accidentally fired a single round, police said.

The round “ricocheted off the concrete floor and disintegrated,” according to a written statement from the department.
The gun went off as the officer began to unload the gun in his office at Horn High School, according to a press release.
Only one round was fired from the gun and it did not hit anyone. The bullet ricocheted off the concrete floor and disintegrated.
The gun misfired when the officer failed to eject the round of ammunition from the guns chamber after removing its magazine, the press release said.
The department is investigating the incident and the officer will be subject to internal discipline.
