The victims cousin, a 24-year-old Hamden man, was waiting in a nearby car and heard a commotion, so got out and was also stabbed. But he pulled out a gun and shot the assailant in the chest.

A man was shot dead on Sperry Street Tuesday night after allegedly stabbing two people, according to police.

The victim’s cousin was waiting in a nearby car and got out to see what was going on, WTIC-TV reported. After the suspect stabbed him in the bicep, the 24-year-old man fatally shot the assailant in the chest.

Police are still trying to piece together what happened. Here’s what they know so far, according to spokesman Officer David Hartman:

The suspect approached a 27-year-old city resident and said “happy Halloween” before stabbing him in the elbow, according to police, WFSB-TV reported.

The man was carrying a knife when he encountered a 27-year-old New Haven man walking on Sperry toward Goffe around 10 p.m.

The man had a valid firearm permit and was lawfully registered, the Hartford Courant reported. The victim is not being charged at this time.

The victim’s 24-year-old cousin was sitting nearby in his car at the time. He heard what happened, got out — and was promptly stabbed himself in the bicep by the knife-wielding man.

The cousin had a legally registered pistol on him. He responded by shooting the knife-wielder in the chest, and killing him.

sounds more like the headline should be “hero legally uses deadly force to defend against knife wielding maniac.”

disappointing that someone died but this is the New Haven in which we live.  Get you gun permit and your training so that you can protect yourself and your family.

Terrible story telling. It should have been preceeded by an hour and twenty nine minutes of the perpetrator terrorizing a summer camp.
