Cavs Collin Sexton gets opportunity to start with George Hill out two weeks with shoulder sprain, per report

According to ESPNs Adrian Wojnarowski, Cavs guard George Hill will miss two weeks with a sprained right shoulder. Hill was held out of Clevelands loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday night due to shoulder soreness. Rookie guard Collin Sexton will start in Hills place while he is sidelined.

Though the injury is unfortunate for Hill, it will provide an opportunity for Sexton to get some extended run, which could be beneficial. The Cavaliers selected Sexton with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 draft with the intention of making him a building block for the future of the franchise following the departure of LeBron James in the offseason, but he has yet to win the trust of his veteran teammates.

According to a recent report from Joe Vardon of The Athletic, Cavs vets think that Sexton doesnt “know how to play” — an issue Cavs coach Larry Drew had to address with his troops recently.

Hill was a late scratch ahead of Wednesday nights game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The veteran point guard worked out on the floor, going through his usual pregame routine, but felt pain in his right shoulder and was held out.

“I actually pulled some of the guys aside when we were in Orlando,” Drew said, via cleveland.com. “That was my exact point — having to be patient with a 19-year-old kid … Just didnt think it was fair at all to go at a 19-year-old kid like that. As I told a couple of the guys, hey, you were 19 at one point. To step up to this level, Im sure you wouldve been in a situation where you were making mistakes too. In order for Collin to learn, hes going to have to make mistakes.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The injuries keep piling up for the one-win Cavaliers, as starting point guard George Hill is expected to be out two weeks with a sprained right shoulder, sources told cleveland.com on Thursday.

When hes out on the floor in Hills place, Sexton will be applying lessons hes learned from the veteran guard.

The Cavs are already without Kevin Love following surgery on his toe. Sam Dekker, Loves primary backup, suffered a sprained ankle on the teams recent road trip and could miss up to a month.

“I know I can go to him about pretty much anything and I know hes going to have my back and have the best interest for me,” Sexton said of Hill, via cleveland.com. “Its good to have that veteran, older guy to lean on, especially so young so I can lean on him and he helps me out. Thats pretty cool.”

Rookie Collin Sexton will start in Hills absence. Sexton made his first career start on Wednesday night, scoring a team-high 15 points on 7-of-14 from the field.

The largest lesson that Sexton has learned from Hill thus far is that mistakes will be made, but its important to use them as learning experiences.

“The biggest thing he told me was, Youre going to make mistakes. Its OK. Learn from them. Keep moving. Keep learning. And do it being aggressive.”

On the season, Sexton is averaging 10.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game on 42 percent shooting from the field in 24.7 minutes per game.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and combo guard Andrew Harrison have agreed to a two-way contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Cavs will be without starting point guard George Hill for the next two weeks, as the veteran is dealing with a shoulder sprain. As a result, the Cavs needed another guard to back up rookie Collin Sexton, who will start now that Hill is injured.

Andrew Harrison was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the 2015 NBA Draft out of the University of Kentucky. He was then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on draft night.

In 129 career games with the Grizzlies, Harrison averaged 7.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 37.8 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from beyond the arc and 77.1 percent from the free-throw line.

The Cavs will keep Andrew Harrison on the NBA roster as long as hes with franchise. The 24-year-old is eligible to spend 45 days with the Cavs before the team must convert him to an NBA deal.

Cleveland has started the season 1-10. Tyronn Lue was hired as head coach, All-Star power Kevin Love recently underwent foot surgery and will be out for the foreseeable future, J.R. Smith told reporters he wants to be traded, and now Hill is out for some time. Safe to say the post-LeBron James era has not been kind to the Cavs.
