Well, possibly lots of things, given the dark and anxious undertones to much of the British band’s music. But the group will be coming to southern California in the most peaceful large-scale setting possible: the picturesque, tree-filled, golf-course grounds outside the Rose Bowl, where Goldenvoice’s Arroyo Seco Weekend found great favor with festival-goers the last two summers.

The Cure will both headline and curate the Pasadena Daydream Festival, being held at Brookside at the Rose Bowl on Labor Day weekend. It’ll be in the Arroyo Seco, but it won’t involve a full weekend: The festival goes down in a single day on Saturday, August 31, with tickets going on sale Friday at noon PT.

Joining the group on multiple stages are such compatible acts as the Pixies, Deftones, Mogwai and Throwing Muses. The bill is rounded out by the Joy Formidable, Chelsea Wolfe, the Twilight Sad, Emma Ruth Rundle and Kaelan Mikla.

The band, who also curated last year’s Meltdown Festival in London, England, celebrated their 40th anniversary at London’s Hyde Park last summer. “Hyde Park was a fabulous experience, the whole day was really magical,” frontman Robert Smith said in a statement. “And we wanted to create something with a celebratory vibe for this summer.”

When the Rose Bowl Board punted on the NFL’s offer to host its games back in 2015, it pinned its hopes instead on the then-new Arroyo Seco Weekend arts and music festival concept.

The recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are preparing to mark the 30th anniversary of their best-selling album, Disintegration, later this month with a series of performances where they will play the entire LP at Australia’s Sydney Opera House. The final Cure set from the Sydney series will livestream on May 30th via Facebook and YouTube.

“It’s clear the NFL can be a distraction in our goals to try to achieve what I believe to be a superior alternative, Rose Bowl Operating Company President and Pasadena Councilmember Victor Gordo said back then. The music and arts festival is long term, it is financially superior and more fitting with our brand.

The Cure have unveiled the lineup for Pasadena Daydream Festival, which they will headline and also curated. The one-day event takes place on August 31st at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

But after two seasons with an attendance highwater mark of only about 28,000 coming to the family friendly music acts, Goldenvoice announced Tuesday a new one-day August 31 festival which targets a different audience, called the Pasadena Daydream Festival, has apparently replaced the Arroyo Seco Weekend.

Gordo, however, seems just as ebullient and optimistic over the new festival as he was for the Arroyo Seco Weekend events.

If you want a peek in The Cure singer Robert Smith's personal playlist you might find some clues in the lineup for the first Pasadena Daydream Festival, curated by the band. The Goldenvoice-promoted all-star Aug. 31 show in Pasadena, California, will take place at the Brookside at the Rose Bowl — site of past Arroyo Seco Weekend festivals — and feature a headlining set from The Cure, as well as performances by the Pixies,  Deftones, Mogwai, Throwing Muses, Joy Formidable, Chelsea Wolfe, Twilight Sad and more.

The City of Pasadena has plenty to be excited about with The Cure and the show they are going to curate at the Rose Bowl, Gordo told Pasadena Now Tuesday. This is a band who is highly regarded around the world. And for them to choose to curate [and] play a show at the Rose Bowl in an anniversary year is exciting. It’s exciting for the City, it’s exciting for the people of Pasadena, and for our business community.

The legendary mood rockers were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and are gearing up to perform 30th anniversary Disintegration shows at the Sydney Opera House (May 24, 25, 27, 28, 30), before playing a series of European festivals in June, July and August.

The Cure, 80s gothmeisters and hitmakers led by heavily mascara-ed lead singer and writer Robert Smith, assembled the entire festival lineup, much like a museum director planning an exhibition of related artists.

Tickets for Pasadena Daydream will go on sale on Friday (May 17) at noon local time here.

Thus, The Cure, 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, have invited a selection of their favorite artists for the summer show, with performances by The Pixies (who opened for the Cure at Dodger Stadium 20 years ago), Deftones, Mogwai, Throwing Muses, The Joy Formidable, Chelsea Wolfe, The Twilight Sad, Emma Ruth Rundle and Kælan Mikla.

photograph by Neil Lupin text Kelsey Chapstick May 14, 2019 Bringing his measured and iconic taste to this side of the pond, Robert Smith and his band the Cure will both headline and curate the Pasadena Daydream Festival, a one day event in the heart of SoCal on August 31st. The impeccable lineup will include indie rock legends The Pixies, Welsh alternative act the Joy Formidable and Nineties rockers Throwing Muses, alongside Revolver favorites like Deftones, Chelsea Wolfe, and Emma Ruth Rundle. Repeating his picks from the 2018 edition of Meltdown Festival in Londons BST Hyde Park, Smith also added Icelandic post-punks Kaelan Mikla and a duo of Scottish acts with Mogwai and The Twilight Sad to the roster.

Rose Bowl CEO Daryl Dunn acknowledged that the idea of a band curating a show is becoming a bit of a trend.

[Robert Smith] did it last year in London [with the Meltdown Festival], and evidently it was very, very successful, said Dunn. You’re hearing more about it now, but if you think about it, sort of makes sense. A lot of times actors become directors. Maybe this is the music version of that.

The event, which takes place on August 31st, will be held at the Rose Bowl in Brookside. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 17th at $149 for general admittance and $299 for VIP at this location.

Gordo said the festival is step with the communitys determination to eschew the NFL but invest in the stadium and use it for other sports opportunities and entertainment.

Tickets go on sale Friday (May 17) as noon local time at General admission will set you back $149, plus and fees; and VIP passes are available at $299 plus fees. One dollar from each ticket and VIP pass sold goes to music and arts education organizations and local charities including Mr. Hollands Opus, Little Kids Rock, Free Arts for Abused Children, Inn-City Arts and The Painted Turtle.

The goal was to make the Rose Bowl so attractive to the music industry that it would be a measure of success, Gordo added. If you play at the Rose Bowl, you’ve made it. And I believe we’re well on our way to accomplishing that.

If the venue for Pasadena Daydream sounds familiar, its the location of the Arroyo Seco Weekend festival – which took place the last two years in June but has yet to be announced for a third iteration. While its demise has not been announced or acknowledged by concert promoter Goldenvoice, its hard not to consider Pasadena Daydream a replacement for Arroyo Seco.

Dunn shared Gordos enthusiasm, saying, I think it’s like I said, if I wasn’t working here, I would be buying a ticket, bringing my son. Because my son likes The Cure and so do I. A lot of the bands now span generations.

The Cure, which was recently inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, has been instrumental in shaping the global, post-punk musical landscape with such albums as Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers. The band has also been responsible for pop hits like Friday Im In Love, Boys Dont Cry, Just Like Heaven, and many more.

With the Rolling Stones, you may have multi-generations of families enjoying the band. I think the similar holds true for The Cure.

But its a completely different type of vibe and event. Rather than classic rockers like Neil Young and The Promise of the Real or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – featured artists from the two Arroyo Seco Weekends – this party will likely feature more black T-shirts and guyliner than leather fringe and flip-flops.

The first-ever Pasadena Daydream Festival is scheduled to place at the Brookside at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The festival will also feature performances by Pixies, Deftones, Mogwai, Throwing Muses, The Joy Formidable, Chelsea Wolfe, The Twilight Sad, Emma Ruth Rundle and Kælan Mikla, it was announced.

Pasadena Now has been published daily since April, 2004 and is among the very oldest continously operated community news websites in the U.S.

The band’s Robert Smith teased the West Coast festival in an interview last week. It’s in a similar vein to last year’s BST Hyde Park concert that celebrated the band’s 40th anniversary and featured a number of other bands besides the Cure. Smith has an extended history putting together these sorts of lineups: He curated the Meltdown Festival lineup last year, and way back in 2004 they went on a Curiousa tour bringing a ton of different acts along with them.

Pasadena Now strives to publish a full spectrum of news and information articles in service to the entire community. The publication will remain free to readers and will not erect paywalls.
