Our dog is the one that saved our lives, because hes the one that told us the fire was going on, said Abraham Morales, who lives in the building and managed to escape the fire. Flames and we just ran out.

Four people were left homeless, but no one was hurt when an overnight fire that grew to 3-alarms destroyed a mixed use building in Paterson that partially collapsed.

As of 8 a.m. firefighters are still on the scene of the 150 foot long by 50 foot wide brick building on River Street, Deputy Chief Deputy Frank Calamita said.

The blaze broke out at about 12:49 a.m. on the second floor of the commercial and residential building and spread into the cockloft and the roof of the building.

The building is likely to have to be demolished, officials said. At one point, 65 to 70 firefighters were battling the fire, Calamita said. Its cause is under investigation.
