Police officer shot in Salem, suspect at large

Highland Elementary School will be closed Wednesday, according to a social media post from Salem Keizer Public Schools. 

The campus also will be closed to employees. The schools personnel office will follow up with staff about next steps.

Salem Keizer Public Schools officials said they will notify parents at 5 a.m. if there any changes to the schedule of Highland Elementary School.

Police say the suspect drove north on Broadway after the shooting. The vehicle, a van, was found four blocks north. 

The Salem Police Mobile Command Unit has pulled in near Highland Elementary School near the scene of the shooting. 

“This is a manhunt now and a matter of public safety,” said Salem Police spokesman Lt. Treven Upkes. “If they are willing to shoot at a police officer theyll be willing to shoot at others.”

A Salem Police officer was shot during a traffic stop Tuesday evening and has been taken to a hospital, officials said.

Police said about 8:30 p.m. an officer stopped a vehicle in the 500 block of Highland Avenue NE. During the stop, a suspect shot the officer and drove away.

SWAT teams with K-9 officers are searching the area near Broadway and Locust streets NE, where the suspects vehicle was found. Police are asking nearby residents to stay inside during the search.

There are dozens of Salem Police cars along Broadway Street NE near Highland Elementary School, north to the Somerset Apartments complex between Locust Street NE and Tryon Street NE.
