Savannah officer dies after shooting incident on Bull Street

A Savannah police officer has died after being shot while responding to a robbery call, authorities confirmed. 

The GBI is investigating the fatal shooting, which happened in the Starland District on Saturday night, the police department said in a statement.

So far in 2019, 41 officers have died in the line of duty, from causes ranging from being hit by vehicles to suffering medical emergencies, according to data from the Officer Down Memorial Page. The last time the overall number was at 40 at this point in the year was in 1965.

Officers went to the 2300 block of Bull Street to follow up on a previous robbery call about 8 p.m., police said.

Two officers, in addition to the suspect, sustained injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Police said Sunday morning one of the officers died due to injuries sustained in the shooting, while the second officer was treated and released.

Officers received a description of a car believed to be connected to the robbery, officials said. When they arrived, a shooting ensued, police said.

"I was going home. I was over at that party there and then I heard about six shots go off,"  Stephen Facea told WTOC. "It wasn’t seconds, and I saw two cop cars racing down."

Two police officers were shot and were taken to a local hospital. The shooter, who was also injured, was taken to a hospital, authorities said. He was also confirmed dead by the GBI on Sunday.

Two officers and a suspect were injured and transported to a hospital. The second officer involved was treated and released. The suspect's condition was not immediately available.

In a now-deleted tweet, Gov. Brian Kemp identified the slain officer. The GBI confirmed the officer’s death but has not formally identified the officer.

Two police officers shot in Savannah

According to a news release from SPD, officers responded to the area around 8:10 p.m. to follow up on a previous robbery call. The officers located the suspects vehicle and tried to approach the car before shots were fired.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to assist in the investigation. GBI agents were at the scene on Saturday night.

Some SCAD students told WTOC they heard some shots and waited a few minutes before they looked out their window. When they opened the window more shots rang out and they ducked behind the wall.

I was going home. I was over at that party there and then I heard about six shots go off. It wasnt seconds. And I saw two cop cars racing down. They went down to 37th street, went up to 38th street. They were looking. They didnt know exactly where this was at,” Stephen Facea said.
