Georgia police officer killed, another injured in shooting, officials say

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – The officer killed Saturday night in Savannah has been identified as Sgt. Kelvin Ansari, a 10-year veteran of the Savannah Police Department.

Sgt. Ansari had just been recognized for his years of service with Savannah Police Department on the first of this month, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant last August.

(CNN)Before Sgt. Kelvin Ansari became a Savannah police officer, he already had a long career in public service.

Sgt. Ansari, Officer Douglas Thomas, and the suspect were involved in a shooting Saturday evening near the 2300 block of Bull Street in Savannah. Officer Thomas has been treated and released.

The Savannah Police Department said in a news release Sunday that officers were following up on a previous robbery call a little after 8 p.m. Saturday. As they approached a vehicle that matched a description theyd been given, gunshots were fired.

The suspect, who has been identified as Edward Fuller III, was also taken to a local hospital. According to a tweet from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, he has died.

A news release from the GBI said that officers responded to the area around 8:10 p.m. to follow up on a robbery call after a person claimed they were robbed leaving the Boyz II Men barbershop on Bull Street. According to police, Fuller stole money and other items before striking the victim with a weapon.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Police in coastal Georgia say an officer has died after being injured while responding to a call.

Officers began their investigation after they arrived on scene. At the time, the suspect was thought to have left the area, but he was in a nearby vehicle.

Officials report that upon arriving at the scene, Sgt. Ansari and his partner, Officer Douglas Thomas, initiated an investigation with the belief that the suspect, Edward Fuller III, had fled. During the investigation, however, the GBI reports that Fuller had actually been in a nearby car and when Sgt. Ansari approached the vehicle, he exited and fired upon Ansari and his partner, striking both.

Sgt. Ansari and the second officer unknowingly walked near Fullers vehicle, unaware that he was inside. According to the GBI, Fuller exited the vehicle and fired shots at both officers. He then fled into the backyard of a nearby home.

A 2018 pinning ceremony held by the Department recognized Sgt. Ansaris wife and two children and noted that he had attended Troy University where he obtained a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice.

Other officers were able to locate Fuller, who exited an outdoor shed with his gun raised, according to the GBI. One officer fired his weapon, striking Fuller. Fullers gun was found to have been stolen.

SAVANNAH, GA (WBTV) – A member of the Savannah Police Department who was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Saturday evening was raised in Charlotte before entering the line of duty.

During a news conference Sunday, Chief Minter said they lost a great man who spent most of his life protecting the streets of Savannah following a distinguished military career.

Sgt. Kelvin Ansari is from Charlotte and would later spend 21 years in the Army before beginning a career with the Savannah Police Department in 2009.

A police officer in Georgia died from injuries sustained after a shooting Saturday night that injured another officer and left a suspect dead, officials said.

Fuller would later flee before authorities were able to locate him, upon which he displayed his firearm and an officer fired in return.

The Savannah Police Department said in a Facebook post the shooting happened around 8:10 p.m. on the 2300 block of Bull Street as officers were following up on a robbery call.

Ansari, Thomas and the suspect were transported to the hospital where Thomas was treated but Ansari and Fuller were declared deceased.

The officers were notified of a suspect's car and were approaching the vehicle when the shooting took place, according to police.

Two officers, in addition to the suspect, sustained injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Police said Sunday morning one of the officers died due to injuries sustained in the shooting, while the second officer was treated and released.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said on Twitter it that has been requested to assist in the investigation, and is "gathering details" from the scene on Saturday night.

Students from the Savannah College of Art and Design told WTOC-TV they heard some shots and waited a few minutes before looking out the window as additional shots rang out.

GBI confirms investigation into officer-involved shooting

"I was going home. I was over at that party there and then I heard about six shots go off,"  Stephen Facea told WTOC. "It wasn’t seconds, and I saw two cop cars racing down."

Surrounding roads were closed off with crime scene tape, and neighbors told FOX28 they were told they could not leave the confines of their homes as authorities investigated.

Georgia police officer killed in line of duty

The GBI said the suspect was also killed in the shooting. A news conference is planned for Sunday afternoon to release further information, according to police.

So far in 2019, 41 officers have died in the line of duty, from causes ranging from being hit by vehicles to suffering medical emergencies, according to data from the Officer Down Memorial Page. The last time the overall number was at 40 at this point in the year was in 1965.
