SPRINGFIELD – A man was stabbed and another man was arrested following a fight at a local nightclub early Sunday morning.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was brought to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance for treatment, said Ryan Walsh, police spokesman.
Police responded to reports of a fight at about 2:10 a.m. at Club Aquarius on the corner of State and Benton streets, Walsh said.
Officers were breaking up a fight and located a stabbing victim, he said. (Police) provided first aid and likely saved the victims life.
Police arrested a man for assault and battery and disorderly conduct. The man who was arrested was not directly involved in the fight, he said.
Two officers were shot at after confronting a suspect outside the Aquarius Nightclub shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday.
A month ago a police officer was shot twice in the arm in what officials called a gunfight in the Dunkin parking lot across the street from Club Aquarius. The fight is believed to have started at the club.
Two people shot at Officer Edwin Irizarry and a second police officer, who was not injured, from different directions in the April 14 incident. Another person who was also in the parking lot at the time of the battle was also struck by gunfire but not seriously injured.
Kenneth Hernandez, 25, was arrested that night and charged in the shooting. Three other people were charged last week in connection to the crime.
This is also the second stabbing that occurred in Springfield in an eight-hour period this weekend. Police are continuing to investigate a fatal stabbing that took place at about 7 p.m. on Boston Road between Brandon Avenue and Shumway Street.
