STAMFORD — Police detectives are working to find the person responsible for killing a man on Frederick Street on Wednesday night while a suspect is being questioned by police.

Police were dispatched to Frederick Street and Cove Road at 9:54 p.m. Wednesday on the report of a man who had been stabbed and had collapsed.

Conklin said there was a trail of blood from where the man was stabbed and where he collapsed. The Fire Department was called to wash away the blood on the street and sidewalk.

The 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital, said Sgt. Sean Boeger, who would not get into the specifics of the case, but said the death will be ruled a homicide.

“For the sake of the integrity of the case, I cannot answer specific questions, but we will at a later date,” Boeger said.

“We have a person we are speaking to,” Boeger said. “The patrol division and major crimes unit have been working on this case since last evening and we are continuing to work on it at the present time.”

The death marks the second homicide in Stamford this year. On March 30, Stephon Walthrust of Queens was shot and killed in Stamford’s South End.

The call came in around 10 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, of a man lying on the sidewalk at the intersection of Cove and Frederick streets, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.

Police and EMS immediately offered aid and the man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Conklin said.

According to Conklin, the man, a Hispanic male in his 50s, had been stabbed multiple times at 107 Fredrick Street and then ran outside and down the street where he collapsed.

Police said their investigation was hampered by a language barrier with all residents of the housing unit, and with a “high level of intoxication,” Conklin added.

The Stamford Fire Department was also called to the area to wash down the sidewalk due to the heavy amount of blood, Conklin said.

Currently, a person of interest in the case is being held on two outstanding warrants and is being questioned.
