Former South High baseball player killed in suspected DUI traffic collision

A 19-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed in a three-car crash in Torrance Thursday night, April 18, authorities said, with a 16-year-old girl arrested who police suspect was driving under the influence of narcotics or alcohol.

Just after 8:40 p.m., at Sepulveda and Hawthorne boulevards, arriving officers found the man who was treated on scene by paramedics but died.

The 16-year-old was driving a Toyota SUV southbound on Hawthorne approaching Sepulveda and ran a red light, hitting the pedestrian who had been standing on an island separating lanes, Torrance Sgt. Ronald Harris said.

The drivers of those two vehicles, a 64-year-old Redondo Beach man and a 69-year-old Torrance woman, were not injured, Harris said.

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) — A 19-year-old college student from Girdwood was killed when a 16-year-old suspected of driving under the influence struck and killed him on a Los Angeles street corner Thursday night.

Los Angeles media reports that Sladen John Mohl, 19, was killed when the 16-year-old suspected of driving under the influence struck Mohl in Torrance, CA, just after 8:40 p.m. Thursday.

An early investigation by the Torrance Police Department found that the suspect driving a 2015 Toyota Highlander struck Mohl while he was standing on a pedestrian island, and then collided with two additional vehicles traveling west across the intersection.

Mohl was treated by Torrance Fire Department paramedics on the scene but was pronounced dead. The intersection was closed for nearly seven hours for the investigation.

“I didnt want to believe it, and I still dont,” Zach Findlay, Mohls El Camino College teammate, told KNBC. I just saw him yesterday.”

Fernlay broke the news to his team early Friday morning, and they made the decision to cancel ECCs Friday night game. Back in Alaska, many of Mohls former South High teammates have shown support and shared messages of condolences on social media.

Mohl graduated from South High School in 2017, and was playing baseball for El Camino College, according to the school newspaper.
