Police Arrest Man Suspected of Fatally Shooting 2 People in West Hills Park

Authorities arrested a man Friday who is suspected in the shooting deaths of two men on a sports field at Shadow Ranch Park, which is near a number of schools and Fallbrook Mall in West Hills.

The suspect, Ryan Conrad, 31, of North Hollywood was arrested on suspicion of murder in Torrance at about 5 p.m., said Los Angeles police Detective Dave Peteque.

Conrad was wanted in the shooting that was reported at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at Shadow Ranch Park in the 22600 block of Vanowen Street, police said.

Cesar Ascencio, 42, reportedly was able to speak to police before he died at a hospital after midnight. Before Ascencio was loaded into an ambulance, he named Conrad as the suspect, but was unable to say anything further, Peteque said during the press conference.

Police circulated Conrad’s photo and urged anyone with information on the crime or his whereabouts to call (877) LAPD-247.

The other victim, a man in his 20s, died at the scene. His name was being withheld pending notification of kin.

Described only as an acquaintance to the victims, Conrad moved frequently throughout the San Fernando Valley, other parts of Los Angeles, and into Orange County, Peteque said. He worked numerous odd jobs throughout the region and has been previously arrested for misdemeanor offenses.
