California mass shooting: Telemachus Orfanos survived Las Vegas massacre only to die in Thousand Oaks carnage

(CNN)Back in April, officers in Thousand Oaks, California, responded to a disturbance at the home where Ian David Long lived.

CNNs Jose Pagliery, Shimon Prokupecz, Scott Glover, Paul P. Murphy, Cheri Mossburg, Ryan Browne, Sonya Hamasaki and Joe Sutton contributed to this report.

Ventura County Sheriffs Sgt. Ron Helus, 54, was identified as one of the 12 killed, while others still remain unaccounted for. Its estimated that 40 to 50 families were at the unification center at 1375 E. Janss Rd., hoping to hear from loved ones who may have been at the Borderline Bar & Grill when the mass shooting took place.

Telemachus “Tel” Orfanos lost his life in the Borderline Bar and Grill, less than 10 minutes from his home.

Susan Schmidt-Orfanos, her voice and head shaking with grief and rage, said outside her familys home, “My son was in Las Vegas with one of his friends and he came home. He didnt come home last night. She said she wanted Congress “to pass gun control so no one else has a child that doesnt come home.”

Telemachus Orfanos was a U.S. Navy veteran with a thick beard, an easy smile and a gladiator helmet tattoo.

“I’m not gonna vilify this kid because hes got parents that are grieving, too,” Mark Orfanos said. “And I feel sorry for them as well. Until I find out particularly what the specifics are with this kid who did the shooting I’m not gonna be vilifying him.”

Photos on Orfanos Facebook page show the Eagle Scout with friends at ballgames or at work. Some photos are embellished with patriotic graphics and another marks the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Telemachus Orfanos loved to go to the popular Western-style bar and go line dancing. He was among more than 100 people inside the venue when a gunman dressed all in black opened fire around 11:15 p.m., killing 12 people and injuring a dozen others.

Twelve people were killed in the Borderline carnage, including a sheriffs deputy described as a “hero.” The gunman was found inside, dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
